Priestly Ordination - Joyful Celebration for SSS in Sri Lanka

Sri 3We, the Province of Christ, the Bread of Life of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in Sri Lanka greatly rejoiced on the 27th April, 2024, as we have witnessed to the Priestly Ordination of Deacon Santana Sabarathinam. The Ordination took place at St. Philip Neri’s Church, Colombo at 9.30 a.m and the ordaining bishop was Rt. Rev. Dr. P. Anton Ranjith, one of the Auxiliary Bishops of the Archdiocese of Colombo. We also had the gracious presence of our own dear bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Winston Fernando, sss, the Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Badulla.

It was so good to see the physical presence of almost all the SSS confreres in Sri Lanka, along with some priests from the Dioceses and other religious Congregations. His family from Jaffna along with some of his relatives and friends, joined us, making the celebration more meaningful and colorful. Fr. Anton Rothitha functioned as the Master of Ceremony looking into all the liturgical arrangements of the day carefully and meticulously.

As a Province, we thanked God for all those who contributed to the initial formation of Fr. Santana, making him who he is today. In his Vote of Thanks, Fr. Santana thanked all his Formators, Directors, Professors, Members of the Provincial Council past and present, Provincial Superiors past and present for their spiritual, human, moral, psychological, intellectual, emotional, and prayerful support given to him during these long years of formation. He also remembered with much gratitude Mr. Philippe Moschatta and his family for sponsoring the entire expenses of his scholastic years of formation and for the spiritual and moral support given. He also thanked all our international SSS confreres, especially Very. Rev. Fr. Superior General and his Team and the Province of Our Lady of Assumption, the Philippines for all the support given during his International Preparations for Perpetual Profession (IP4).

In his address of welcome and gratitude, Fr. Justin Chawkan, the Provincial Superior, also announced the first appointment of Fr. Santana. Accordingly, Fr. Santana was appointed as the Assistant Parish Priest of St. Thomas’ Church, Matale, being a member of the Blessed Sacrament Community, Matale from May 13th, 2024 onwards.
